Progression to Higher Education

Third Level Links / Higher Education Links Scheme

All courses at Colaiste Ide provide a rout to further education. One of these Routes is the higher education Links Scheme. This enables students who have achieved FETAC certification at Level 5 and some at Level 6 to a range of courses in Higher Education.

The Higher Education Links Scheme (HELS) links specific FETAC Level 5 and some Level 6 awards to reserved places on a variety of higher education courses.

In 2005 the Institutes of Technology and some higher education institutions introduced an additional Pilot Scheme for FETAC Level 5 and Level 6 award applicants.

Both schemes enable access routes to facilitate greater progression to third level programmes.

Applicants must obtain a full FETAC award. A componant will not suffice.

FETEC(NCVA) Level 6 Awards linked to higher education courses

Some higher education institutions offer links between FETAC Level 6 Awards and third level courses.
Information on these links and details of admissions process, should be obtained from the Admissions Office of the appropriate institution directly.

The only way for Leaving Certificate Applied students to access Third Level Courses is through the HELS scheme

Applicants are advised at all times to confirm linked awards, any additional module requirements, application processes and scoring systems with the Admission Offices of the participating higher education institutions
Applicants presenting FETAC (NCVA) Level 6 Awards should contact the appropriate higher education institution directly for information on the admissions process.

Important Information Relating to the Pilot Scheme

Under the pilot scheme initiative most course places are open to FETAC Level 5 and Level 6 Award holders, along with Leaving Cert applicants. Therefore the quota of places under the HELS does not apply to this pilot scheme
For some courses applicants may require a specific FETEC mathematics modules or language module as a mandatory component of their FETAC Award. This requirement may be waived if the applicant has evidence of an equivalent achievement - e.g. Leaving Certificate subject.
