The Dublin City Council Personal Training and Sports Nutrition Traineeship is a unique partnership between Dublin City Council and FET College Íde Finglas, designed to provide learners with the qualifications, practical experience, and professional skills needed to build a successful career in the fitness and leisure industry.
The Personal Training and Sports Nutrition Traineeship is for someone who wants to coach people in the gym, design fitness programmes, and work as a personal trainer.
This innovative traineeship combines classroom-based learning with structured workplace experience. Learners attend FET College Íde Finglas for three days each week and complete two days of workplace training within Dublin City Council leisure facilities or a gym of their choice. The strong collaboration with Dublin City Council provides learners with direct exposure to the leisure industry and creates valuable pathways to future employment opportunities.
Training is delivered by an experienced sports department with over 40 years of expertise in sports education, coaching, and fitness training. Learners benefit from exceptional facilities, including two fully equipped gyms with modern strength and conditioning equipment, an aerobic studio, a sports hall, and specialist fitness training areas. These industry-standard facilities provide everything required to develop practical coaching, personal training, and fitness instruction skills in a professional environment.
The programme leads to a Diploma in Personal Training (ITEC Level 3) together with QQI Level 6 Component Certification. Learners also have the opportunity to gain a swimming qualification, further enhancing their employability within leisure centres, fitness clubs, community sports programmes, and recreation facilities.
A key feature of the traineeship is the opportunity to gain practical experience within Dublin City Council leisure and community services. Learners become involved in community health and wellbeing initiatives, working with a diverse range of groups, including older adults and local community organisations. Activities may include supporting fitness programmes, recreational sports initiatives, and community engagement projects such as pickle ball, reflecting Dublin City Council's commitment to promoting active and healthy lifestyles throughout the city.
The programme is provided at no cost to eligible participants. Trainees may retain most types of social welfare payments while participating, and all tuition fees, examinations, books, and course materials are fully funded. Every learner receives a college-branded sports top and T-shirt.
FET College Íde Finglas is committed to supporting learners at every stage of their educational journey. Dedicated learning support is available for those returning to education, ensuring that all participants have the opportunity to achieve their goals in a supportive and inclusive learning environment.
Applications are welcomed from jobseekers and mature learners who are interested in pursuing a career in personal training, fitness instruction, sports nutrition, or the wider health and leisure sector. Commencing in September, the Dublin City Council Personal Training and Sports Nutrition Traineeship provides an excellent opportunity to gain recognised qualifications, industry experience, and valuable connections within one of Ireland's leading local authority leisure services.
